    Love that nautical star sticker you put on the table and with the pillows, beach towels for seat covers😘. I cringed when you were barefoot scraping barnacles I was waiting for a scream. Your wife looked happy after it was cleaned up. Fair winds and following seas. ⛵

    Awesome Job. I have the same boat! I was stuck in some 10 footers two days ago for only about 2 hours couldn't imagine through the night. I was lucky the weather causing the surf was much further off shore and so I only had 15kt winds. You guys did great.

    Sailor Susie was quiet and obedient avoiding mutiny throughout this voyage! We also learned that a ship has "one" master. We understand how difficult it was for Susie to stay quiet for the duration of this trip who was obviously anxious for some "tacking and jibing" under rough weather.

    This is cool as a one off and a valuable learning experience but regardless of your S2 being a Coastal Cruiser I recommend you set the boat up properly for this type of sailing. You need a storm Jib, Tow Line, Life Lines, Lazy Jacks, and a swim platform with ladder. You also need to add a fixed Solar Panel you don’t want to rely on an electric bilge pump with low battery alarms going off. You also need a check list for harsh conditions and know when to sail off a bit. You can always fire up the motor to make up time. I’m not far from you in SWLA. I routinely race the Harvest Moon Regatta and coastal cruise between Louisiana, Houston and Corpus and the GOM can get hairy when the weather isn’t optimal. Your S2 is a well built boat you just need to prepare her and yourselves for the conditions. Knowledge, Preparation and experience lead to confidence 🤙🏼.

    Love this channel esp for the cost breakdowns. Native Floridian, always thought sail boats were for rich snobby types. Learning it need not be so. I’d like to get into this. Its a money hole I know but so are a motorcycles and I’ve happily spent a ton on those the last 20 years or so.

      Sure. however the boat is being pushed -wind or motor, still steers with the rudder.

    Q: after spending all the money etc...and you have the sense of ownership.. is it possible to just rent a boat that already has all the stuff done..then turn it back in when you're through? Kinda like renting a condo in Florida for a week or 2..after you're through..it's their upkeep etc..and hurricane..water heater etc.. All this is void if you just WANT to own a boat etc.. Just curious.. Thx..Good info..

    • @AdventuresInParadise
      @AdventuresInParadise Місяць тому

      My wife suggests renting power boats but we just bought another one as I don't feel satisfied using somebody else's boat and it's nice to have that sense that you know where anything is and it's your stuff.

    How I got started: -bought a cheap 20 footer trailer sailer. -watched youtube -Quickly got tired of having to step the mast every damn time and the boat sitting interestingly on the trailer. -remeberes I don't own a house to park it at. -found out marinas are stupid expensive -found out the process to get insurance is stupid expensive -the actually insurance isn't that expensive -found out storage near the water is expensive ish -???? -no profit -its been sitting in storage 1.5 hours away from water for the past 8 months -anyone want a super affordable 20' trailer sailer? They're so cheap!

    • @AdventuresInParadise
      @AdventuresInParadise Місяць тому

      Back before I bought one from West Marine, you could find cheaper ones on Amazon. We used that one for a few years and it was fine, but you would not want to have an outboard mounted to it. After the Catalina 22 we got a larger sailboat and then after three more years sold that and now have an Express Cruiser, still in the Marina. Still have the West Marine dingy and outboard that we used one time two years ago. Need to sell it.

    The clip things are called shackles. The cool little ends are called acorn nuts. Sailboat pulleys are called blocks. I like using butyl tape to bed the hardware. You can use it in bad weather and it’s better than silicone sealant. When using silicone type sealant, you want to let it set up before you tighten down the hardware all the way, so all of it doesn’t squeeze out.

    You proved that boat can easily handle 25 knots and open ocean. Pretty much and 30 footer id going to get bounced around like that. If you could have lowered the main and put out just a scrap of jib it may have been a bit more comfortable. getting over 5 knots is over powered. Overall you did great.

    you can install depth finder sending unit inside the boat in the lower hull, get a short length of 6inch diameter or just a bit larger than the sender pvc pipe with a screw cap, epoxy it to the hull inside near bilge in any convieniant location below water line at lowest position possible, install the sender inside the pipe faceing downward, fill with water, a small notch will alow wire location so cap screws on, unit will work thru the fiber glass, its now protected inside the hull safe from damage and away from those busy little sea creatures

    Hi, great video. Our first sailboat was a 1986 Catalina 22. We bought it in 1988 and sailed it on a small inland lake in Southern Ohio. The brochure said "it sleeps five"....I told my wife "four of them better be pretty cute". 😎 Anyway, we sailed that lake from March to November on our Catalina 22, then our Hunter 25, then our Hunter 27. We retired, sold our house in ohio and in florida and bought a 1976 Pearson 365 ketch in 2002. Weve been cruising full-time for 22 years on the Pearson and have been from Nove Scotia to Grand Turk. Were slowing down now, im 78 and shes 77 but we're still sailing thousands of miles a year. My point is that there's a line that runs from your weekend Catalina 22 to a full-time cruising sailboat dream. Good luck and enjoy the adventure. Steve&Judy s/v Norne Gaest
